Those impossibly handsome British actors, with their classical pedigree, rakish charisma, and mischievous smirks, are certainly a breed apart. And the fact that 24-year-old Henry Cavill effectively plays one on the Showtime series The Tudors, which has just returned for its second season, is proof enough that the tradition runs deep. Of course, Cavill doesn't actually play an actor on the show. He plays Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk: elevated commoner, backroom schemer, and close confidant of Jonathan Rhys Meyers's King Henry VIII. But in Cavill's hands, Brandon is every bit the seasoned thespian-as one had to be to survive in Henry's court-all inward calculation and solicitous glances.

Cavill's own early days as an actor were spent in the theater. Then things got interesting. Based on a small sampling of film and television work, he was invited to audition for the title role in Superman Returns, and wound up as a surprise contender to become the next James Bond. Suffice it to say, he didn't get those toles, which is all the same, since he isn't the kind of talent you pour into a mold. He's the king you watch grow. Cavill can next be seen in Joel Schumacher's Town Creek, a thriller filled with twists and turns. So don't pity poor Henry Cavill. Keep an eye on him-if you can.
